Program Content

Research indicates that junior primary school children can be successfully taught how to behave safely around dogs, provided there is teacher commitment to the program and teachers are provided with resources and reference material for use before and after classroom presentations. (For research results see Trialed and Tested). At the same time it is essential that parents – the children’s role models – and other adult members for the community are also educated about safe behaviour around dogs.

The Delta Dog Safe™ SA Program promotes what a child should do when;

  • Patting a friendly dog - how to approach
  • How and when to leave a dog alone - what are the real signs
  • What you should do when approached by an unleashed, unknown dog
  • What you should do if an unleashed unknown dog knocks you down and
  • How parents can help in getting the message across to children and adults alike.

Following recent successful trials on primary school children, an organisation called Delta Society Australia Ltd have developed a comprehensive package incorporating a training seminar, lesson plan, teacher's resource kit, early childhood kit, community brochure and toy dog.

In the classroom presentation, real dogs are not used. The Delta Dog Safe™ program uses visuals, audience participation but most importantly life size toy dogs. Toy dogs are used as opposed to real dogs because,

  • there is absolutely no risk of children being bitten (especially scared or anxious children)
  • a toy dog may be used extensively with no stress
  • a toy dog will not cause classroom distraction
  • a toy dog may be manipulated to provide appropriate response to a child's behaviour
  • a toy dog can travel on hot days
  • a toy dog does not provoke anxiety in children who have a fear of dogs.

Teacher’s will receive a Teacher Resource Kit prior to the Delta Dog Safe™ presentation.
